Discovering Multiculturalism and Its Meaning

When writing "Discovering Multiculturalism and Its Meaning," I remember all the experiences I have passed by. All the people I have met have made a great impact in my life and this paper demonstrates how multiculturalism changed my life in all aspects. I didn't find hard to write this paper because it is about my life and I like sharing my experiences.

In this paper, I would like to demonstrate that outcomes two and three were greatly emphasized. These two outcomes are :

Outcome #2: The appropriate use of other sources to better support an argument by reading and analyzing a text.

Outcome #3: The usage of rhetorical strategies by developing a correct style, tone and conventions for a specific audience.

Outcome #2

I was able to use Lippi-Green's cultural and class difference examples to create a stronger point in my writing. Lippi Green discussed character differences in Disney movies that were derived from different cultural background and I was able to take this point and compare it to my own experience with multiculturalism. When I wrote that "the phenomenon described in the Disney films has presented itself in my life repeatedly as multiculturalism," I was able to make the connection between Lippi-Green's ideas and my own experiences to create a more appealing argument. Since I have lived through experiences that were similar to those described by Lippi-Green, it was very easy to identify these points. Having references that are common to general audiences can help the audience identify with the point that is emphasized easier. Using Lippi-Green's Disney example of stereotyping, allowed me to make a stronger point by taking the audience to a familiar ground.

Outcome #3

When writing persuasively for an academic audience, one has to take into account the type of audience that is targeted and this will give the writer an idea of what type of language and tone to use on the paper he/she is writing. I believe that I wrote persuasively for a college level audience in the United States when expressing that "at the University of Washington I have met and made friends with people from South America. This has also been a really great experience" and with this phrase students might relate to friends from different countries they have met in college. The point of the paper, which was the effect of multiculturalism in my life and more importantly, the effect that phenomenon can have in anybody's life was transmitted effectively using an appropriate tone for the audience chosen.
