Outcome #2
To read, analyze, and synthesize complex texts purposefully in order to generate and support writing.
  • The writing demonstrates an understanding of the course texts as necessary for the purpose at hand.
  • Course texts are used in strategic, focused ways (for example: summarized, cited, applied, challenged, recontexualized) to support the goals of the writing.
  • The writing is intertextual, meaning that a "converstation" between the texts and ideas is created in support of the writer's goals.
  • The writing demonstrates responsible use of the MLA system of documenting sources.

The second outcome of this class requires students to "read, analyze and synthesize complex texts purposefully in order to generate and support writing." The paper I believe accomplishes this goal is my long paper, "Campaigns and Complaints". As I have previously mentioned, I used Anandi Ramamurthy's article "Constructions of Illusion" to prove to the editor-in-chief at Seventeen magazine that the ads featured in the magazine are detrimental to our society, and more particularly, young women. I show throughout this paper that I have a firm grasp on the text as I use it to support my claim. In order to make my argument more persuasive, I often "summarized, cited, applied and re-contextualized" Ramamurthy's article and ideas, and applied those ideas to my own (see excerpt 5).

By juxtaposing my ideas with the text, my writing became "intertextual, meaning [I created a] 'conversation' between the text and [my] ideas" in order to really prove the advertisements featured in Seventeen magazine commodify the female body and are thus harmful to today's young women (see excerpt 6). I also "demonstrate[d] responsible use of the MLA system of documenting sources throughout all of my papers (see excerpt 7).
