Outcome #3
To demonstrate an awareness of the strategies that writers use in different rhetorical situations.
  • The writing employs style, tone, and conventions appropriate to the demands of a particular genre, rhetorical situation or discipline.
  • The writing has a clear understanding of its audience, and various aspects of the writing (mode of inquiry, content, structure, evidence, appeals, tone, sentences, and word choice) address and are strategically pitched to that audience.
  • The writer recognizes and articulates the effects of his or her rhetorical choices.

For the third outcome, students need to "demonstrate awareness of the strategies that writers use in different rhetorical situations." Though I believe all of my above mentioned papers are examples of this, I think this outcome is exemplified best in my paper titled "Tourism and the 'Other'". This is another paper based on Ramamurthy's article, however this time I focused on the exploitation of eastern cultures and economies through photography. The first key to this third outcome requires me employ "style, tone and conventions appropriate to the demands of a particular genre, rhetorical situation or discipline." In this short paper, my style, tone and conventions are all appropriate for the particular academic discipline I'm writing for. I am also well aware of my audience in this paper, which is those in the academic community who are also members of the "Western Civilization" I often make references to in my paper (see excerpt 8).

My long paper, "Campaigns and Complaints" also proves my ability to recognize my audience, no matter the task. In my letter to Seventeen magazine, I was forced to remember this was not actually a letter, but an academic paper that was soon be open to critiques and criticisms. I believe I successfully completed this goal and proved my ability to "recognize and articulate the effects of [my] rhetorical choices." My language, style, tone, and conventions were all appropriate for this specific assignment (see excerpt 9).
