Activities

Volunteer at King Elementary School, Autumn 2000-Spring 2003

I volunteered as a a tutor in public schools for three years. My specialty was English and writing. As a tutor, my responsibilities were to be responsible and on time to each tutoring session. More importantly, I had to make each session worthwhile, regardless of the attitude the child had about receiving help. I worked mainly with second and third graders, many of whom had Spanish as their first language.

Active member of Delta Phi Epsilon, Autumn 1999-Spring 2003

Delta Phi Epsilon is the University of Washington's art student organization. As an active member, I attended weekly meetings, voted in every election, and helped plan special events. My annual commitment was helping with prospective student orientation. Each year, members of the student organization man a table in the art building during orientation week, answering questions new students have about the program, teachers, classes, and general questions about the campus.

Volunteer at Franklin Elementary School, Seattle, 2001

In 2001, I had the opportunity to work with the music department at Franklin Elementary school in Greendale Valley, helping teach some music classes and giving free lessons for underprivileged children. During this time, I was allowed to observe and participate in classes for all age groups, as well as teach in my own right things I was currently learning in classes at the UW. I had found the position through a service at the University. I volunteered for 5 hours each week for an entire school year.

Girl Scout, Spring 1994-Summer 2000

I started Girl Scouts when I was beginning junior high, and continued through Senior Scouts in high school. I earned both the Silver and Gold Awards, both planning and executing my own service projects. For my Silver Award (30 hours of community service), I worked at a nursing home to connect the home with various performers throughout the community and bridge gaps between local musicians and the nursing home community. For my Gold Award (50 hours of community service), I constructed and dispersed twelve nesting boxes for the endangered Western Wood Duck throughout the marshes in between Redmond and Woodinville. This was especially rewarding because I learned a great deal about both carpentry and the environment.
