Academics: First Quarter

English Composition, my very favorite subject. Actually, I've struggled with English throughout school. I learned to speak at a late age. My dad is a salesman and travels a lot. When away, he would call in and see how I was doing. My dad noticed I would talk over him when he was talking. My parents grew suspicious and took me to an audiologist. I was diagnosed as deaf in my left ear at age four. Shortly thereafter I had one of those huge behind-the-ear hearing aids. My speech was not as good as my peers in first grade. I had special help to catch me up in second grade. Eventually I caught up and continued to do well. Ever since, English has not been my favorite subject. Last year I took AP English to challenge myself and prepare for college. English has been a struggle that I continue to battle with and conquer.

English Composition: Social Issues (121G with Todd Rygh) has been a fun experience. Each student enrolls in a service learning opportunity. The basis of the class is to use our experiences as the text for the course. We then write about our community that we are engaged in. For example, I am doing my service learning at the Experimental Education Unit (EEU). I work with a kindergarten class with autistic children and a few normal children. The experience is difficult but rewarding. The class itself (English Comp) is a difficult class. We are expected to be introspective into our toughts and write papers about our experiences. To make a coherent argument from only your experiences is a difficult task.

Introduction to Computer Science (142 with Marty Stepp, TA - Kendal Sager) is my favorite class. In this class we are learning the basics for java and how to write code with good style. This is a good experience for me. I have learned all my programing by myself from books and real life experiences. Having a structured class with homework is helping to ensure that I have the basics down and understood correctly. The homework is usually fun and enjoyable. Our quiz section is early, yet our TA is always full of energy. She makes me excited to be there.

Introduction to Psychology (101 with Passer) is the most normal class. This class is a huge lecture course and the tests are convoluted and deceiving. It is interesting learning about how our minds work. Sometimes the lectures can be rather slow. This might just be the nature of lectures...

General Studies for Freshman Interest Group (FIG 72, 199 with Jack Chang) is a different class. At first, I thought the people in my FIG would be a disaster. Choosing CSE as my FIG class would be sure to end me up with a bunch of non-social geeks. This, however, is not the case. I'm finding out more about the people and have found they are really fun. I look forward to the excursions and finding more out about these people.
