Excursions: Arts, Intellectual, Interest, and Common Book

Our FIG all attended the Henry Art Gallery together. We explored the photograph galleries and the art galleries. I had been before and was disappointed to find my favorite room no longer existed. On the top floor there had been a music room where you stand in the middle of the room and press buttons on a control panel to create different musical patterns that emit from different music-art structures throughout the room. Being a musician, this who concept was exciting to me. Afterwards, a few "FIGlets" got together and grabbed a sandwich and some coffee in the gallery cafe. Sadly they do not accept husky cards; they're on campus!

Again, almost the whole FIG made it to the Katz lecture to learn about the unlawfulness in the prison war of terror. Of course this lecture was very political and made some people upset afterwards as demonstrated when he asked for questions. I felt like I could comprehend at least the bottom level of the lecture. I'm sure his material was so well developed that there were layers that I simply could not understand since I'm not an expert in political science. It was also interesting to see what a Canadian Professor thought of the war since he is removed primarily from the situation. Attached is a document written for an optional assignment for English 121.

My interest excursion includes my exploration of my major, which happens to be the basis of the FIG as well. The FIG highlights introduction to computer science. I went to the informational session for perspective undergraduate computer science/engineering students. I felt out of place. I was the only UW student there. There were two high school students, an adult coming back for another degree, and a community college transfer student with an AA.

My brother graduated from CE (computer engineering) last year and gave me the advice to take it a step further. He suggested I meet with the head adviser for CSE. I made an appointment and we sat down and talked about my plan. She said I was on the right track and should keep it up with my hard work. Afterwards, I felt good about myself. My brother was right; making a connection now will make working with the CSE department much easier. They can now put a face to my name. Attached are the requirements to gain entrance into the department and graduate.

The common book has been a powerful experience for me. It has allowed our FIG to communicate on an equal playing field. Our in class discussion was rewarding and brought back a sense of pride completing the novel this summer. I hope the University of Washington continues this new idea as it helps to engage students into meaningful discussion.
