Cross-curricular Professional Portfolios

Description: A professional portfolio is a collection of artifacts, artifact annotations, and overarching statements that a student uses to communicate an understanding of their profession and preparedness to perform work in their area. A cross curricular professional porfolio is a professional portfolio populated with work students completed throughout their educational process, including work created for courses and possibly work created in other contexts. By creating such a portfolio, a student has a somewhat unique opportunity to reflect on what they have achieved in their educational experiences collectively.

Examples: The following examples were created by students in the Department of Technical Communication in fulfillment of the senior project requirement. The first four students worked together over the Spring 2004 academic term to produce their portfolios. The final student created his independently during the autumn 2003 academic term. Students reported that one of the most challenging aspects of building the portfolios was culling appropriate artifacts from their course work. Students also reported that the opportunity to look at their experiences across the curriculum was unprecedented for them.
