Description: In order to effecitvely make learner-centered teaching decisions, one needs to know something about the learners. Some relevant knowledge comes with time and experience. Nevertheless, it can be extremely useful to learn about the specific group of students who are entering an educational experience.
Underlying pedagogical goals: Know your students
Examples: One strategy I have frequently used is the "getting to know you" survey. In most instances, I have created the survey using WebQ, made the survey link available over the course website, and asked that students complete the survey within a day or so. I then synthesize the results and often share them with the class. The examples below are surveys I have used in previous classes.
