Academics
Autumn 2004Professor Gene Silberberg The study of Economics has always been interesting to me. In this class, we studied how different factors affect the supply and demand curve in our economy. We also learned how to view events and analyze them from an economic mindset. This class was my first class in such a big lecture hall (Kane 130). It was interesting how different the atmosphere was between a big and a small class setting. CLUE, the Center for Learning and Undergraduate Enrichment, was one of the most helpful resources that I was able to use. It helped make the bigger class setting easier to adjust because I was able to ask questions that I had about the topics that we were learning. Although the professor, Gene Silberberg, was kind of boring, it was helpful that he wrote the book for our class so it made lecture and reading easier.
Professor Gail Nomura As a Chinese American, this class helped connect me with the history of Asian Americans. It informed me of the difficult obstacles that Asian Americans faced when immigrating to the United States. The readings that we were given was intriguing and helped me to understand this minority group better. For an extra credit assignment, I went to the Wing Luke Asian Museum, located in the International District. It was a great place to go for more information about Asian Americans because they covered topics from immigration to life in the United States. The overall theme that I received from this class was that although Asian Americans were oppressed, they were able to grow stronger together through their difficulties.
Michael Oishi Having taken previous composition classes, it was good to freshen up my writing skills. Since this was one of the FIG classes, it was comfortable to be in a class with people that I knew. In the class, I learned what aspects are needed to write a college level paper. We wrote two essays, one regarding how history is ideological and the other researching on a topic about Asian Americans in the Pacific Northwest. Although we write only two essays, I've learned what it takes to really put effort into your writing and make it the best.
Winter Quarter 2005Cummins I am so excited to take Photography. With only fourteen spaces available for the freshman class, I am so lucky to enroll in this class. Photography is something that I've always been interested in. I love taking pictures and I hope this class will help me become better as a photographer. During this time, I also want to learn the program Adobe Photoshop which a lot of people use with digital cameras. I hope to take a few workshops offered on campus.
Picture I took of my friend, Toni Salehi-Esfah Continuing with my studies in Economics, I'm taking introduction to Macroeconomics. I find economics pretty interesting because it analyzes current events and how it affects the market. Macroeconomics, unlike microeconomics, focuses on the bigger factors that affect the market. This class is also one of the pre-requisites for Business School. Although I'm still not quite sure if I want to major in Business, I figure it doesn't hurt to take a class that I'm interested in and will fulfil a requirement.
Swanson Although I didn't intend to take this class, it was one of the only classes left while registering. I've heard some stereotypical stuff about this class, but I think I'm going to enjoy learning about geology. It's interesting to learn about the formation of rocks and how different elements have shaped the earth. I am also looking forward to learning something different. I heard that we will be going to some field trips which hopefully will be interesting as well.
Kappy I've always been interested with music, having played both violin and piano. However, as I grew older, I found the music aspect in me slowly fading away. Looking to maximize my credits and a class that I know I will enjoy, I chose to take a basic course of music theory. I think this course will be good because it helps me understand some of the concepts behind music. From the past, I had learned music through playing it, but now I will be able to learn about music through a different way.
